Outside In: Free Training on Tackling Hate Speech in Youth Work

Outside In is an Erasmus-funded project to provide training to youth workers on how to tackle hate speech in youth work. Research shows that often youth workers feel unsure how to respond when a young person says something that expresses religious or other hatred.  We have arranged a set of five public training dates over the coming months and are hoping to attract a wide range of delegates - with priority to those who work regularly with young people.

Organisations can book individual places by clicking on the relevant date below.

Unless otherwise stated all courses will be held in the Dialogue Room of Interfaith Scotland. Address -  Flemington House, 110 Flemington Street, Glasgow, G21 4TG

We are also able to arrange in-house sessions for organisations that have a team of people who could benefit.  We may need to charge a small amount to cover our travel costs and the trainers’ lunch.

Aim of the session:

Using a highly participative, non-formal educational approach, the training aims to equip those working in a youth setting with appropriate tools for tackling hate speech. Participants will explore different issues relating to cultural and religious diversity.  They will learn how to recognise hate speech, and how to manage the situation when it occurs.  They will also develop tools to support transformation of the beliefs and attitudes that underpin the behaviour.

Learning Objectives

a) Improve understanding of issues surrounding hate speech, and religious and cultural diversity

b) Recognise forms of hate speech and related challenging behaviour

c) Learn ways to effectively manage the situation when hate speech occurs

d) Explore different approaches to transforming the young person’s outlook

Intended Audience

The training is most relevant for those who work regularly with groups of young people, in a professional or voluntary capacity.  This includes youth workers, youth leaders in faith communities, teachers and those who work with young offenders.
